Poway, California (pte023/20.06.2003/13:53) - Computer trade chain Gateway http://www.gateway.com is collecting used print cartridges in 192 stores in the US. The computer dealer hopes this will not only prove beneficial to the environment, but also establish better customer bonds.
Customers who return a used printer cartridge to the stores will receive a five dollar rebate on their next cartridge bought through Gateway. The deal is valid for most HP and Epson printers sold by Gateway.
Gateway estimates that by the end of 2003 over 400 million cartridges will be deposited in US trash dumps. Gateway plans to recycle "selected" cartridges.
The scheme comes on the heels of Gateway's computer recycling programme, in which clients and small companies received a 50 dollar discount on a new computer if they turned in their old computer and monitor to the "Gateway Recycling Benefit" programme. For a fee of 30 dollars, larger companies can have Gateway pick up and dispose of their old computers.
