Luxembourg/ Vienna (pte033/18.06.2003/15:03) - SES ASTRA http://www.ses-astra.com has ordered two new satellites from Lockheed Martin http://www.lockheedmartin.com . They are intended as a replacement and back-up for Astra 1K, the satellite destroyed during a launch in autumn.
Within the year, a distribution office for CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) will be opening in Vienna to market the future expanded capacities of the 13 satellite ASTRA fleet. It is still not clear whether UPC will set up and run the planned uplink in Vienna.
The first of the two new satellites will be called 1KR and go into orbit in the second half of 2005. The second is a reserve in case of problems with the first. If the 1KR launch is successful, the second satellite will lift off under the name 1L a year later. Both have a life expectancy of at least 15 years and a transmitting capacity of 140 watts.
