London (pte044/16.06.2003/15:31) - The online music distribution business is gaining ground, in part due to the successful start of Apple's iTunes Music Store - a service currently only available in North America.
Meanwhile, Sony has launched the online distribution of its music repertoire in Great Britain through the Internet company OD2 http://www.ondemanddistribution.com , as reported by branch medium Cnet.
OD2 head Charles Grimsdale said turnover was growing rapidly and the activity on partner sites was increasing. His company is the only online music distributor in Europe to hold licensing contracts with all five major industry labels. Grimsdale called Steve Jobs of iTunes his "personal star" for providing the spark for the online distribution business.
OD2 are currently in negotiations to launch a service outside of Great Britain. In Germany four of the major labels have already agreed to work with OD2.
According to Cnet, Apple has plans to introduce the iTunes Music Store in at least one European country soon. Apple Germany http://www.apple.com.de confirmed that preparations to launch the service were under way, but said there had not yet been any negotiations with labels. While there is no specific schedule for the launch, independent labels have reportedly voiced a large interest in working with iTunes.
