Hong Kong/ London (pte021/13.06.2003/14:15) - Finnish world mobile hardware leader Nokia http://www.nokia.com appears to be having a strain of bad luck with UMTS. According to various reports, Hutchison Whampoa's UMTS provider 3 http://www.three.com.hk has ordered the replacement of 700 UMTS-Node-Bs transmitters with nodes from other companies because Nokia's WCDMA hardware did not pass interoperability tests.
The decision was also based on difficulties with multi-media functions and unstable software. Siemens and NEC will supply the replacements.
The move has been neither officially denied nor confirmed by 3 or Nokia. While the Finns have admitted that the "final testing and optimization" of their WCDMA solutions would last until the end of the year, they claim not to have revoked any contracts. According to Unstrung, communications head Thomas Joensson has said: "We don't unannounced contracts".
Nokia may also soon face disappointment in the case of 3 UK http://www.three.co.uk , where Nokia will reportedly not even be involved in the second network phase. In addition to problems with 3G, security issues with Nokia's GPRS infrastructure have also arisen. @stake http://www.atstake.com has discovered that users logged into the network can carry out denial-of-service attacks through Nokia's IP-650-based Gateway GPRS support nodes (GGSN). Nokia has called on all clients to update to Release Level 2 http://www.atstake.com/research/advisories/2003/a060903-1.txt .
