Mobile phone celebrates 20th anniversary
Motorola played pioneering role

Schaumburg/ Wiesbaden (pte043/12.06.2003/18:20) - Twenty years ago Motorola http://germany.motorola.com introduced the first mobile phone - the DynaTAC 8000X.

At the time, the device was far too expensive for the average consumer. Yet today in some countries mobile phones are used by 80 per cent of the population. Within 20 years, the mobile phone has become a universal device and even changed our communication habits.

The precursor of today's mobile phone weighed nearly a kilo and looked more like a walkie-talkie than a phone. In spite of its dimensions, weight, one-hour speaking time and whopping price of 3,995 dollars, by 1984 Motorola had sold about 300,000 units.

The DynaTAC 8000X system was conceived by Rudy Krolopp, the director of Motorola's industrial design department. According to the company, the system was based on space technology. The group says it invested 15 year of research and 100 million dollars in the development of the civil application which became the world's first commercial mobile phone.
