London (pte042/12.06.2003/17:57) - The British government has set up a new website offering students an online political discussion forum. As reported by the BBC today, the new HeadsUp http://www.headsup.org.uk site is designed to encourage kids to engage in political debates.
The site is the result of a cooperative project between the British Hansard Society, the British Lower House, the Ministry of Education and the Young People's Unit. According to the BBC, the project has arisen out of a need for young people to better understand political processes, such as those leading up to the War in Iraq.
Teenagers can use the HeadsUp site indirectly to ask politicians questions. The Hansard Society has promised to redirect all questions to the responsible ministries or ministers. Answers will then be sent to the student's school e-mail address.
Kids will only be allowed to register through their schools. This is a measure to prevent online piracy and stop lobbyists from abusing the site. Teachers will also have to submit their data. Registered students will then receive their log-in details, allowing them access to the portal.
