Philips designs futuristic TV
Television from behind the looking glass

Amsterdam (pte037/12.06.2003/16:46) - Philips http://www.philips.com HomeLab will soon be introducing a new development in home entertainment - "Mirror-TV".

The system consists of a flat monitor built into the space behind a polarised mirror, which allows almost 100 per cent of the light from the display to penetrate the surface.

In the first phase of the product's introduction, Mirror-TV will only be available in hotels or by special order. According to Philips, a serial version for the mass market could be available before 2005.

The producers say the device, which is designed to be mounted on a wall, provides an ideal way to consume media content in non-traditional places, such as the bathroom. The group thinks the system could become especially popular in environments with little space.

In tests conducted with a hidden camera in the Philips HomeLab, the device was used most often to watch news or travel information while shaving or brushing one's teeth.

Mirror-TV uses a 17, 23 or 30 inch monitor. In addition to serving as a television, the system could also be used as an interactive information terminal for presentations, for web-browsing, or as a display for a joined PC.

Mirror-TV is part of the company's efforts to design an intelligent network in the home. Gottfried Dutine, CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics, says the system represents an important step forward in the group's entertainment electronics offer. At the same time, he says the system is an example of the Philips vision of ambient intelligence, where technology is embedded in the environment and easy to use.
