San Jose (pte031/12.06.2003/15:25) - The US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) http://www.semichips.org has drastically revised its original prognosis for chip sales during the current year. SIA now 'only' expects growth of 10.1 per cent to 154.9bn dollars.
In its last forecast in November of last year, the branch association had announced it expected up to 20 per cent growth in 2003.
Not surprisingly, SIA president George Scalise said the change was partly due to the effects of the SARS epidemic and the fact that companies were still reluctant to buy computers. But the main cause for the change in SIA's prognosis has been slower than expected development on the North and South American markets, where chip sales are expected to drop by 2.1 per cent to 30.6bn dollars this year.
In Europe sales in the semiconductor industry are predicted to climb 11.8 per cent to 31.1bn dollars. The Japanese market may even see 17.5 per cent growth to 35.8bn dollars.
Next year SIA expects a massive increase in semiconductor sales, mainly due to a higher demand for storage chips, especially for mobile phones. According to the analysts, turnover could increase by 17 per cent to 181bn dollars. After this boom, growth is expected to return to single digit figures. By 2005 SIA thinks the market will see a turnover rise of 5.8 per cent and a seven per cent boost by 2006.
