Amsterdam (pte043/11.06.2003/16:20) - Market researchers IDC http://www.idc.com have observed uninterrupted growth in the use of broadband in Europe.
Last year the number of broadband connections doubled to 13.4 million. Turnover in this area reach 3.4 million euros in Europe. According to IDC the rapid growth of this sector will be further driven by increased competition in the short term. In the long term, analysts believe the broadband market will be dominated by appealing content offers.
Hein Bakker, a senior analyst for IDC in the field of broadband, says the increased spread of broadband services, a greater palette of choices and lower prices, as well as increased use of the Internet will provide the foundation for the growth of broadband in the coming year. He added, however, that on the increasingly saturated market providers will have to distinguish their product palettes from others in order to attract the most clients.
IDC expects that by 2005 there will be 62 million broadband connections in Europe. Turnover in the broadband business is predicted to reach 23bn dollars by 2005.
In 2002, DSL was the preferred type of connection, comprising 70 per cent of all connections. This is why, say the analysts, the market is still dominated by former telecoms monopolists and their ISP subsidiaries.
