Internet (pte036/11.06.2003/15:18) - The Samba developer team has placed its first beta version of Samba 3.0 in the web.
While the new version of Samba's free file and printing server for Windows clients is still in the test phase, it is said to closely resemble the final version.
The developers at Samba have invited all interested users to test the new version online. They have also announced that this new version of Samba 3.0 signals the end of their 2.2x line http://at.samba.org/samba/samba.html .
One new feature of Samba 3.0 is its support of Active Directory. It enables a Samba 3.0 server to become a member in an ADS realm and authenticate users with LADP/Kerberos. The updated server has also been equipped with a new authentication system and now supports Unicode. Similarly to Windows, Samba has also introduced a "net" command that can replace several utilities in the long term. Printer support for Windows 2000, XP and 2003 has also been improved. Finally, the new version makes it easier to migrate from a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Samba domain.
