Microsoft buys technology 'made in Bukarest'
US group buys rights to GeCAD anti-virus software

Redmond (pte035/11.06.2003/15:15) - Microsoft has been shopping for software in Rumania. The US software giant is taking over all rights and technology by anti-virus specialist GeCAD software in Bukarest.

Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com says it intends to equip its own platforms with GeCAD anti-virus solutions. At the same time, Microsoft plans to use GeCAD's experience to improve the support of anti-virus programs by third companies. The group has released no further details on the deal http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2003/Jun03/06-10GeCadPR.asp .

The GeCAD purchase fits into Microsoft's "Trustworthy Computing Initiative". The aim of the initiative is to better understand the ways in which systems are attacked and anticipate future hacker strategies. The findings will then flow into Microsoft product development. One of the group's planned projects is to find a way to continually supply end users with the latest virus protection programs.

The US group remains secretive about when it intends to introduce its own anti-virus software and claims that no product plans or time schedules are on hand. Last month Microsoft founded the Virus Information Alliance together with Network Associates and Trend Micro. In April 2003 the US software maker announced it would be bringing out "Windows File System Filter Manager Architecture" to help anti-virus specialists develop new applications.
