Rome (pte036/10.06.2003/15:25) - Italian telecoms group Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) http://www.tim.it intends to expand its mobile network with third mobile generation EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) technology, as reported today by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ)
This makes TIM the first larger European mobile operator to set up a network with cheaper EDGE technology, in addition to using UMTS.
When the network is launched next year, EDGE will enable the downloading of videos and other multimedia services in more rural areas of Italy where UMTS is simply too expensive an option. According to WSJ, TIM intends to combine both technologies, establishing UMTS in Italy's cities and EDGE in rural areas by 2004.
EDGE is based on GSM systems in combination with new software. Many western European mobile operators have tested EDGE, but opted to set up UMTS networks.
