Redmond (pte049/06.06.2003/16:24) - Closure of the European case against Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com has been further delayed because the European Commission (EC) has decided to review new evidence, as reported in the New York Times today.
European anti-trust authorities have sent a form to music and film companies, questioning them on the technology they use to spread their multimedia content on the Internet.
Observers expect the survey to delay the end of the investigative proceedings by at least two months. They assume that the commission wants to present an airtight case. The delay comes somewhat as a surprise, as commissioner Mario Monti announced last autumn 2002 that the investigation had been completed. If this renewed investigation digs up new evidence, the case could run on for another year.
In 2000 the EC accused the software group of bundling its media player together with its operating system in such a way as to gain an unfair competitive advantage.
