Kisch prize goes to "Zeit" reporter Stefan Willeke
Further awards for Kurt Kister and Guido Mingels

Hamburg (pte046/06.06.2003/15:52) - "Die Zeit" journalist Stefan Willeke has won this year's Egon-Erwin-Kisch Prize for his story on Jobst Wellensiek, a Munich lawyer who gets called in to help medium-sized German companies facing bankruptcy. The article was published under the title "Herr der Pleiten" (trans: "Lord of Bankruptcies").

The Kisch prize, awarded by German magazine "stern", is one of the most prestigious awards for journalists working for German language media. The first prize winner receives 10.000 euros.

Second place this year went to Kurt Kister of Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) for his piece "Wolfslaecheln und Nadelstiche", in which he describes an argument between German politician Edmund Stoiber and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder which was authorised for publication during their electoral campaigns. Kister's insightful article describes the debate from his subjective perspective.

Third place went to Guido Mingels of Swiss publication "Das Magazin", for his portrait of hotel thief and safe cracker Josef Wessely.

A total of 458 pieces were submitted to the Egon-Erwin-Kisch Prize this year, of which 32 made the last round.
