Hamburg (pte046/05.06.2003/16:30) - Turnover in the German information and telecommunications branch is expected to increase by 0.5 per cent to 132.6bn euros this year, as outlined in the "Telecommunication" report published by the marketing ad section of the Axel Springer publishing house http://www.asv.de .
In 2002 turnover in information technology dropped 4.6 per cent to 68.2bn euros, while the telecommunications branch grew 0.9 per cent to 63.8bn euros - mainly thanks to telecommunications services.
Deutsche Telekom managed to retain its position at the forefront of the market with a turnover share of 68 per cent. This year, providers of call-by-call and preselection services are predicted to gain some ground.
The mobile communications branch also grew in 2002, in spite of poor economic conditions, with total turnover climbing by 2.8 per cent to 23.7bn euros. Meanwhile, 71 per cent of Germans have mobile phones, of which 53 per cent used pre-paid cards in 2002. Analysts expect the third mobile communications generation to become established this year.
According to the report, last year 44 per cent of Germans used the Internet regularly and this year the number will cross the 50 per cent mark. Modern technologies such as ISDN and DSL will also continue to replace the analogue modem, the study predicts, but the print media will remain dominant in advertising for information technology and telecommunications.
