Beijing (pte042/05.06.2003/15:30) - Telecoms supplier Lucent http://www.lucent.com plans to expand its research and development operations in China with an investment of 50 million dollars.
The focus will be on developing 3G technologies such as CDMA and UTMS, as announced by the company in Beijing today http://www.lucent.com/press/0603/030604.nsa.html .
Lucent manager Mary Chan announced that Lucent's R&D division in China had been responsible for the development of many key technologies, and that the investments would benefit the development of the group throughout the world.
Lucent is already well-represented in China with about 3,000 employees, and the group's R&D team holds 21 patents in China. The company's research division Bell Labs China, which runs R&D centres throughout the country, has founded six research institutes, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing University.
