Germans spending less on holidays
Average of 67 euros a day

Hamburg (pte043/03.06.2003/15:04) - Germans are inclined to spend less on their holidays than in the past. The average German spends 67 euros a day and a total of 998 euros for an average of 14.8 days on holiday.

The study conducted by the B.A.T. recreation research institute http://www.bat.de is the first to examine German tourism spending habits since the introduction of the euro. A total of 2,893 holiday-makers were asked how much they spent on their most recent trip.

Horst W. Opaschowski, director of the institute, says discount trips have become more popular, with the price taking precedent over the type of trip. Germans are opting for cheaper, shorter and more spontaneous trips, and there is a noticeable trend toward last-minute flights.

On average, Germans spend more on holidays in Bavaria (68.3 euros per day, per person) than in Turkey (62.1) or Croatia/Slovenia (50.9). Spain is proving one of the more expensive locations (70.9 euros per day), exceeded only by Austria (72.2), Greece (72.6), Tunesia/Morocco (81.2), Egypt (84.7), Australia (91.3) and the USA (104.8).

One unusual finding of the study was that men tend to spend more for their holidays (1,049 euros) than women (951 euros). Urban dwellers tend to spend more (1,084 per person) than people living in the country. Couples with dual income and no children spend more than families with kids (894) and singles (1,133).
