Intel invests in Elpida Memory
100m dollars for Japanese DRAM chip producer

Tokyo (pte042/03.06.2003/14:37) - Intel Kapital is planning to invest 100m dollars in Japanese chip producer Elpida Memory.

Elpida is the fifth largest DRAM chip producer in the world. As the company announced today in Tokyo, the sum will be invested in the expansion of the Hiroshima factory. At the same time, Intel and Elpida have set up a several year agreement on the coordination of roadmaps http://www.elpida.com/en/news/2003/06-03.html .

Elpida is the only Japanese DRAM chip producer. Intel's 100m dollars are to act as a capital increase for the production of DRAM chips with less than 0.11 micron on 300mm wafers. Further details have not yet been made public, but US analysts expect that Intel will take over part of Epida's production.

The investment does not give Intel any voting rights in Elpida, which will still be equally controlled by Toshiba and Hitachi.
