London (pte046/02.06.2003/16:30) - Europe's largest mobile phone dealer, British firm Carphone Warehouse http://www.carphonewarehouse.co.uk , plans to expand its activities to the German market. Its aim is to take over Hutchison Telecommunications Germany.
As reported by Financial Times today, the British company has offered up to 40m pounds to purchase the Orange subsidiary. The acquisition could serve as a springboard into the more profitable service provider market.
Hutchison Telecommunications acts as a service provider for about half of German mobile operators and manages the accounts of about 700,000 clients. The takeover could help Carphone Warehouse break onto a market that has been off limits to mobile phone retailers due to German regulations.
Hutchison currently has 13 mobile phone businesses in Germany. These will be linked with the 70 Carphone Warehouse chain stores.
Carphone Warehouse further hopes that the move will help eliminate its debts in Germany, where is has most likely been making a loss. The operating result of the entire group is estimated at over 56m pounds (78m euros).
