Sony Pictures plans movie channel in Germany
Possible partnerships with Premiere and T-Online

Los Angeles/ Dusseldorf (pte032/30.05.2003/16:06) - Hollywood studio Sony Pictures http://www.sonypictures.com is planning to launch its own television channel in Germany, as reported in Handelsblatt today.

"We want to establish our own channel on the German market. I am convinced there are good opportunities for such a cable or satellite channel," said Michael Grindon, president of Sony Pictures Television International, in an interview with Handelsblatt.

Sony is considering using pay-TV channel Premiere, cable network providers and the Internet to distribute the movie channel. It is not clear when the station would go on the air.

Premiere has expressed enthusiasm about Sony's plans. "A Sony channel on Premiere would be an enhancement," said Georg Kofler, head of Premiere. Various Hollywood competitors such as Disney and Universal already run channels on Premiere.

Sony is also interested in a partnership with the Internet company T-Online. "Broadband has a high strategic importance for us," said Grindon. In autumn 2003 T-Online is planning to introduce a video-on-demand service. While Sony's own first experiments with video-on-demand have yielded little commercial success, many industry experts still believe in the future of this entertainment option.
