Munich (pte042/28.05.2003/16:29) - According to Siemens http://www.siemens.de , instead of supplying abstract information, future automobile navigation systems will integrate the information into an image of traffic activity.
Siemens researchers call the concept "augmented reality", but point out that it may not be available for a few years due to the high cost and sophistication of the graphics.
In GPS-based systems used up to now, the driver has had to combine the directions provided in the form of arrows and a computer-generated voice with his view of the actual traffic situation.
The augmented reality system, however, integrates the GPS-based directions into a video recording from a camera mounted on the front of the car. The driver then simply follows the arrows in the image. The system is supposed to be especially useful in the event of complicated traffic situations, or when the directions involve several quick turns in a row.
