Singapore (pte035/28.05.2003/15:18) - The outbreak of the deadly lung disease SARS has had a noticeable effect on the sale of entertainment electronics in East Asia.
According to market researchers GfK Asia http://www.gfkasia.com , the sale of computers, mobile phones and colour TVs fell by 32 per cent in April in Beijing and 28 per cent in Hong Kong. A survey of 134 electronics dealers indicates that the dismal situation could continue through July. The Wall Street Journal reports that, even if the situation improves, it will be a gradual development.
The situation affects both retailers and manufacturers. GfK analysts Andy Drake called it a frightening situation for PC and peripheral device producers, with no turnaround in sight. Although sales are expected to improve in July and August, Drake believes no real improvement will be seen until the third quarter.
The GfK study shows that sales of home entertainment products are, however, expected to increase first, for the simple reason that those who are still too afraid to go out much will be looking for ways to entertain themselves at home. Next on the list of consumer priorities are mobile phones, digital cameras and trips abroad. Sales of digicams have already started picking up in Beijing and Singapore, and are expected to further increase when consumers become more confidant about going to stores. (newsfox-special SARS)
