Authorities deny existence of Gulf War Syndrome
War veterans protest against results of new study

London (pte044/26.05.2003/16:32) - An official study by the Medical Research Council (MRC) has come to the conclusion that "Gulf War Syndrome" does not exist, as reported by BBC Online http://news.bbc.co.uk .

War veterans have protested against the results of the study, which also disputes a connection between the various symptoms of the disease and nerve gas or uranium. While the term "Gulf War Syndrome" is listed in the Encyclopaedia of the Royal College of Medicine, the MRC researchers feel there is yet no proof that the disease exists, as there is no one diagnosis. Instead, they say individuals may have suffered from chemical poisoning or psychological pressure.

This is the second blow within a week for war veterans seeking compensation for injuries or trauma suffered in battle, writes the BBC. Those who fought on the Falkland Islands and in Bosnia are also having a difficult time getting financial acknowledgement from the government.

Many veterans of the Gulf War have complained of lack of concentration, headache, weakness and fatigue. They consider this study an effort on the part of the government to avoid having to pay them compensation. Defence minister Lewis Moore has said the veterans would however continue to fight for damages.
