Brussels (pte043/23.05.2003/17:00) - The winners of the first eEurope awards http://www.e-europeawards.org for online health prevention or "eHealth" have been announced at the "eHealth 2003: ICT for Health" conference in Brussels.
Four winners from France, Great Britain, Spain and Sweden were selected from a total of 42 candidate projects. The winning Spanish project "EVISAND" set up a virtual environment for health prevention, while an IT infrastructure for health prevention in Sweden was developed by the winning Swedish "SJUNET" project. The French project, called "COHERENCE", created an information system for the successful restructuring of hospitals. And the British "NHS Direct" project received the eHealth award for its website http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk .
EU ministers have again stressed the need for national and regional plans for the development of online health prevention projects and intra-European coordination, and agreed to support legal and administrative measures promoting eHealth in their countries.
An initiative of the European Commission, the first eHealth 2003 conference was organised in close cooperation with the Greek council presidency.
