Egham (pte033/23.05.2003/14:56) - Gartner market researchers http://www.gartner.com have delivered a double-edged prognosis for the server market this year.
While sales in servers went up 12 per cent in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Asia) compared with the same period last year, turnover fell two per cent to 3.6bn dollars.
Compared to the previous quarter sales fell by eight per cent, with a total of 375,000 servers sold in the EMEA region. The western European market grew for the first time in two years, mainly driven by Great Britain and Scandinavia.
Gartner analyst Karen Benson attributes the decline in turnover to the weak market for RISC/Unix or proprietary servers, as well as the still cautious buying policy among firms.
The leading suppliers remain Hewlett-Packard (HP), IBM, Dell, Fujistsu Siemens and Sun Microsystems. While HP was able to sell two per cent more servers than during the same period last year, it lost four per cent of its market share. Sun Microsystems sold 18 per cent fewer servers.
