Geneva (pte026/23.05.2003/13:54) - The World Health Organization (WHO) http://www.who.int lifted its travel advisory for Hong Kong and China's southern Guangdong province today, Friday, stating that the SARS epidemic was under control in both regions.
Hong Kong has reported two further cases of SARS and two additional SARS-related deaths. According to the WHO, both regions remain "endangered".
Meanwhile the situation in Taiwan has worsened. The Taipei health ministry has confirmed 55 new SARS infections within one day. Up to now 538 people have contracted SARS in Taiwan and 60 have died of the disease. Just a few days ago the WHO extended its travel advisory for Taipei to all of Taiwan.
Thursday evening the WHO increased the number of confirmed SARS cases in Hong Kong to 1,722 and 258 deaths. Up to 300 people in China have died of the illness and 5,271 have become infected. The WHO has recorded a total of 8,046 cases of SARS and 628 deaths in 28 countries (by Thursday evening). (newsfox-special SARS)
