Beijing (pte033/21.05.2003/15:33) - In a further step in the fight against SARS, the People's Republic of China has approved the first two pharmaceutical products for the clinical treatment of the potentially deadly virus.
The first is Sivelestat Natrium, which is injected and increases lung capacity. The second is a pig liver product. According to China Daily http://www1.chinadaily.com.cn , animal experiments have confirmed that this product reduces the surface tension of the alveolae or air sacs in the lungs and improves the exchange of gases.
In a related development, the World health Organization (WHO) removed the Philippines from the list of SARS-affected regions today, as no new cases have been recorded within a period of 20 days. A total of twelve cases of SARS and two SARS-related deaths have been reported in the Philippines. Libya, Kuwait, Lebanon and Taiwan still have an entry ban for Philippine citizens, while Bahrain and Singapore have already lifted their entry restrictions.
Meanwhile, Australia has lifted its travel advisory for Singapore, while maintaining its advisories for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In total, the WHO http://www.who.int has registered 7,919 cases of SARS (as of Tuesday, 20 May). Up to now 662 people in 28 countries have died of the disease. (newsfox-special SARS)
