Redwood City, California (pte032/21.05.2003/15:26) - Mobile infrastructure providers may soon face tough times, after a 14 per cent drop in worldwide investments in the sector during the first quarter of the year.
According to a study by the Dell'Oro group market researchers in California http://www.delloro.com , only 6.4bn dollars in turnover in mobile infrastructure equipment were made during this quarter.
In spite of the season-related weakness of the first quarter, Dell'Oro director Greg Collins said the results fell far below expectations. Dell'Oro has also issued a poor prognosis for the entire year, predicting that low spending and the weak economy will perpetuate the negative trend.
On an international scale, the European GSM, GPRS and EDGE standards lost the most ground, with turnover in infrastructure equipment falling by over 25 per cent. US-CDMA technology saw little change and UMTS equipment boomed in spite of the general decline. Sales in the Chinese TDMA standard have also increased.
