Cupertino, California (pte038/20.05.2003/15:34) - Tadpole Computer http://www.tadpole.com is offering 64-bit notebooks for UNIX operating systems at under 3,000 dollars (or 2,600 euros).
After the managers of the "Tadpole Computer" hardware section located in Cupertino bought out the company from British parent group Tadpole Technology http://www.tadpole.co.uk , the company entered the low-cost segment for portable 64-bit computers.
The new so-called SPARCLE devices come equipped with an UltraSPARC-IIe-CPU with 440 or 500 MHz and 256 KB Level 2 Cache or an UltraSPARC-Iii-CPU with 650 MHz and 512 KB Level 2 Cache.
The devices also have up to 2 GB RAM and are equipped with standard WLAN hardware. A TFT monitor allows clients to choose either 14.1 or 15 inch diagonals. The standard operating system will most likely be Solaris 9. The rechargeable battery, which weighs about three kilos, provides power for up to three hours. It is not yet clear how and when these devices will become available in Europe.
