Neuss (pte034/15.05.2003/14:28) - Toshiba's Storage Device Division (SDD) http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage has developed a re-usable DVD with a capacity of 36 GB that uses blue laser technology.
The method uses short-wave blue lasers that are much more dense than the original long-wave red lasers, thus allowing an increased storage capacity on the currently available two-layered and one-layered DVDs.
Until now the above-mentioned DVDs could only store 8.5 and 4.7 GB respectively. The blue laser silver discs are intended for use mainly in the entertainment industry. Toshiba SDD will introduce the new method in the second half of the year at the DVD forum. Two-hundred-and-fifteen electronic and software manufacturers, as well as entertainment electronics companies that devote themselves to the standardisation and promotion of DVD standards will take part in the forum.
