Sony Mobile Playstation planned for 2004
Competition for Nintendo's Gameboy

Los Angeles (pte048/14.05.2003/16:36) - Sony http://www.sony.com is intending to put a new mobile game on the market. The new baby in the Playstation family is to be called "Playstation Portable" (PSP) and is predicted to be released in the fourth quarter of 2004, said Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE).

The PSP (the "Walkman of the 21st Century") was presented by Ken Kutaragi, president and CEO of SCE, in Los Angeles at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) http://www.e3expo.com .

"Since the Playstation revolutionised the video game attitude at home, our aim is to bring new power to the portable video game sector," said Kutaragi at the expo, a statement that challenges Nintendo's Gameboy.

The required software information will be available in autumn for game developers.

Sony has developed a new Universal Media Disc (UMD) for the PSP. The 6cm-large disc is protected by a cartridge and has a saving capacity of 1.8 GB.

The walkman of the new century will have Memory Stick extensions for network connections, thanks to USB. Cordless data exchange will also be possible.
