Moscow (pte043/14.05.2003/15:43) - The number of mobile phone users in Russia grew by 4.4 per cent in April alone, which makes a total of 22.23 million Russians with mobile phones. This indicates, says the consulting firm, J'son & Partners http://www.json.ru , a penetration rate of 15.1 per cent.
Most of the new customers are using the net provider MTS http://www.mts.ru , from which Deutsche Telekom won a blocking minority of about 25 per cent. On Wednesday MTS announced that the 10-million-customer-mark had been passed.
Russia is one of the strongest growing mobile phone markets in the world. In 2002 the number of users grew by 120 per cent, albeit from a low starting point.
Russian customers are not only using local network providers, but also foreign technologies; next to GSM, the standards TDMA/DAMPS, NMT, IS-95, IMT-MC and also satellite telephones are being used.
