Protective products against SARS on the market
Clothing that filters tiny microbes now in use

Beijing (pte051/13.05.2003/16:20) - New protective clothing against SARS contamination were presented in China today. Masks and specially-developed microbe-filtering clothes that have been developed through intensive research and laboratory tests are the result of painstaking work done by the National Headquarters for SARS Prevention and Control.

The products will be given a test run in Beijing hospitals. The SARS prevention team are working around the clock to prevent the spreading of the disease.

The presented head masks were developed by the Chinese Military Academy of Medical Sciences, reports the Beijing government http://www.beijing.gov.cn/english . The in-built ventilation system is meant to protect medical personnel when dealing with infected patients. The protective clothing is made of special material and filters air-borne microbes that are bigger than 27 nanometres, which includes those of the SARS virus. The clothing weighs less than 1.5kg.

"The new technologically-advanced clothing will be given to the worst-hit regions for free," said the vice president of the Chinese Military Academy of Medical Sciences, Huang Peitang.

The evaluation and the proficiency of the new equipment is anxiously awaited.
