Black year for IT services
Worldwide decrease in market in 2002

Stamford (pte035/13.05.2003/14:03) - The year 2002 proved to be the worst year in the history of the IT branch. Market analysts Gartner http://www.gartner.com reported in their recent study that the worldwide IT-market turnover decreased by 0.6 per cent to US$536b. The number one position is held by IBM, which managed to keep its position with a takeover of PwC Consulting.

According to Gartner, market consolidation equally affected the small players as well as the big ones. Declines were found to hit the areas of consultation, development and integration, whereas services such as outsourcing and process management saw a development in growth. "Many businesses still see outsourcing as the best way of reducing costs in the wavering economic field," said Gartner analyst Kathryn Hale. "On the other hand, businesses that dealt with specific projects suffered due to the recoiling of customers from technically challenging issues."

IBM remained the unchallenged number one IT company with a turnover of US$40.1b. Big Blue holds second place with a turnover of US$21.1b. Number three was Fujitsu, ahead of Hewlett Packard.

Growth was seen in the Asia-Pacific region and Japan. All other regions registered a drop in turnover.
