Moscow subway disinfected weekly
Health ministry sets up 24-hour SARS hotline

Moscow (pte035/09.05.2003/15:42) - One of the world's busiest underground networks is to be disinfected once a week as authorities in Moscow try to stop the killer SARS bug reaching the Russian capital.

The first massive operation began late on Wednesday night and the city's chief medical officer, Dr Nikolai Filatov, said the underground and all other forms of public transport would be sprayed with anti-viral disinfectant every week for an indefinite period.

The move came as the city become more and more nervous about the possible appearance of the deadly disease.
A 24-hour SARS hotline has been set up and the Health Ministry http://www.mednet.ru/ is printing millions of leaflets advising Muscovites what they can do to avoid contracting the virus.

Russian officials have said they are considering closing the country's border with China while Health Ministry officials are discussing restricting travel to China.

Deputy Health Minister Gennady Onishenko told Ekho Moskvy radio: "Only Chinese citizens should be allowed to leave Russia and only Russian citizens should be allowed in." (newsfox-special SARS)
