Beijing: Method of SARS infection largely unknown
Health office reports number of new cases dropping

Beijing (pte025/09.05.2003/14:04) - Health authorities in Beijing have not been able to find out how 60 per cent of patients admitted to hospital with SARS became infected with the deadly disease.

"According to preliminary analyses the other 40 to 50 per cent had contact with patients and are already under quarantine or medical observation," vice director of the health office Liang Wannian said, as quoted by Australian news service ABC http://www.abc.net.au .

Beijing is the city most affected by SARS. Nearly half (2,316) of all confirmed cases in China (4,698) have been registered in Beijing.

"We don't know how 60 per cent of those who suddenly show up in the hospital became infected," said Wannian. According to city government speaker Cai Fuchao, health workers have been able to lower the rate of infection among doctors and nurses.

Wannian said that the "rising trend" of SARS in the capital city is effectively under control and that there are indications that the number of new cases may be declining. Experts however continue to emphasize that the illness has not yet reached its worst degree of spreading. (newsfox-special SARS)
