London (pte034/05.05.2003/13:49) - The British Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) http://www.caa.co.uk has published a study showing that the ban on the use of mobile phones in aeroplanes is completely justified.
According to the findings, radio waves from the phones can disturb the electronic equipment on planes. The CAA therefore plans to uphold its ban on the use of mobile phones on planes.
Due to the strength of radio waves generated by mobile phones, navigation and communication could be disrupted when phones are in use. Instrument displays could malfunction and provide false information, and background noise could disturb communication between the plane and air traffic controllers.
Based on the study, the CAA recommends that ground personnel remind passengers to turn off all mobile phones that may be in their luggage before checking in. The CAA also intends to encourage better awareness among private plane operators. Further studies are planned to help airlines react to technological change.
