DT to set up 15,000 'basic phones'
Pilot project will cover only general demand

Bonn (pte024/30.04.2003/12:11) - German telecommunications firm Deutsche Telekom (DT) http://www.telekom.de plans to replace 15,000 of its public phones with so-called 'basic phones' by the year 2005.

The new phones will be placed in less frequented locations to cover basic telephone needs. Instead of using coins or phone cards, callers must pay with calling cards. Collect calls can be made and all emergency calls are free. The new phones are especially resistant to vandalism.

DT said in a press release today it was launching the pilot project together with the regulation authority and communal associations in an effort to uphold the supply in less frequented locations. The increased use of mobile phones has changed the fundamental demand for public access.

"The goal of our pilot project is to secure the broad supply of public telephones in Germany, even if the use of certain locations has significantly declined," said Karlheinz Jost, head of distribution and marketing at DT's subsidiary T-Com.

DT currently runs 65,000 phone booths and 13,500 tele-stations with multi-payment functions. Another 15,000 public phones are situated on private property, such as shopping centres, train stations or airports.
