Stamford (pte043/28.04.2003/15:36) - The world server market grew during the first quarter of 2003. According to a Gartner market research study http://www.gartner.com released today, 10.4 per cent more servers were sold in the first three months of 2003 compared to the same period last year. A total of 1.22 million servers were sold.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) continues to dominate the market ahead of Dell and IBM. The biggest loser of this period was Sun - the only top producer to face falling sales figures.
According to Gartner analyst Shahin Naftchi, the world server market has grown more than expected in the first quarter, but the war in Iraq and the poor economy have still taken their toll on IT expenditures. The lifecycle of systems has increased and large companies remain reluctant to implement new high end systems.
Market leader HP increased sales by 3.6 per cent and retained a market share of 29.1 per cent (Q1/2002: 31 per cent). At second place, Dell boosted its sales and achieved a market share of 20.2 per cent (Q1/2002: 17.5 per cent). IBM was able to improve its market share from 13.6 to 14.8 per cent, while Sun dropped back from 6.3 to 4.9 per cent.
