Seoul/ Geneva (pte040/25.04.2003/14:16) - French-Italian chip giant STMicroelectronics (ST) http://www.st.com and Korean semiconductor producer Hynix http://www.hynix.com have announced a partnership to develop so-called NAND flash memories.
ST hopes to profit from the Koreans' DRAM know-how and low cost production, while Hynix has its sights on ST's numerous clients. The first jointly developed products are expected to be ready for mass production in the second half of 2003.
NAND products are mainly used for highly compressed storage applications, such as those in mobile phones, digital cameras or mp3 players.
Market researchers Dataquest expect the NAND storage market to reach 2.2bn dollars this year, and turnover to climb to 3.2bn dollars by 2005. In the first quarter of this year ST managed to more than double its profits.
