Brussels (pte034/25.04.2003/13:30) - Console and computer games sold in Europe are now required to carry an age-based rating. The aim of the so-called Pan European Game Information (PEGI) http://www.pegi.info system is to act as a reliable guideline for parents, customers and online clients.
The rating system became effective yesterday in 16 European countries, with the notable exception of Germany. According to the European Software Association (ISFE) http://www.isfe-eu.org , the system is the first to provide an age-based limitation that corresponds with the standards of various European countries.
The rating consists of two parts: one which suggests the adequate age for the player (image top), and one which provides a description of the game's content (image bottom). The combination of the two should give parents and kids a better idea of what to expect from a game.
