Hagfors/ Boulder (pte037/24.04.2003/14:24) - The KDE project has published the beta version of its office package Koffice 1.3. Compared to earlier versions, the software package offers some new features such as a new databank frontend and improvements in KWord and KPresenter.
The new release is available in 40 languages. The final version of the office suite with word processing (KWord), table calculation program (KSpreadsheet), presentation software (KPresenter) and report function (Kugar) is planned for September 2003 http://www.koffice.org/announcements/announce-1.3-beta1.phtml .
The new integrated databank frontend Kexi can be used with various databanks, although the developers of the KDE project only recommend MySQL. The add-on can prepare data for other sections of the office package, enabling the supply of data to KWord for serial letters or the composition of business reports with Kugar components. KWord contains a new import filter for Microsoft Word. The export filter for RTF now also supports tables, footnotes and images, while the export filter for LaTeX supports images and footnotes.
The word processing program also offers an improved spellchecker and supports bookmarks. The presentation application of KPresenter has been updated with improved transition effects and a preview function, as well as improved HTML export. Among other aspects, KSpreadsheet contains about 100 additional formulas and several additional import and export filters. Kugar has been revised for better integration into KOffice.
