Helsinki (pte030/11.04.2003/12:17) - Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia http://www.nokia.com has announced it will be cutting a total of 1,800 jobs in its infrastructure division Nokia Networks.
The majority of personnel cuts will take place in Finland (1,100) and mainly affect the research and development (R&D), sales, marketing and support departments .
Nokia justifies the redundancies with the generally poor economic climate and the "substantial" loss predicted for Nokia Networks during the first quarter of 2003.
Nokia announced in February it was planning to centralise its research and development (R&D) department and cut up to 550 jobs (see newsfox: http://www.pressetext.com/pte.mc?pte=030213017&phrase=Nokia ). By closing its R&D subsidiaries, the Finish group hopes to improve synergy effects. Nokia ended the fiscal year 2002 with a sizeable profit, while Nokia Networks recorded losses and lower turnover.
