Brussels (pte025/10.04.2003/11:52) - The European Commission (EC) plans to introduce stricter regulations for food and stimulant advertising, as reported by Handelsblatt http://handelsblatt.com .
Commissioner David Byrne intends to subject advertising slogans to strict scientific criteria to force them to stay closer to the facts. He hopes this will prevent producers from making false promises and deceiving consumers.
If the new version of the law is approved, Handelsblatt predicts this will mean the end of several well-known slogans, such as "Red Bull gives you wings" (in German: "Red Bull verleiht Flügel"). It may generally appear that Haribo "makes children happy", but it will be hard to come up with the scientific proof. The EC is also against vague assertions, such as "cleanses the body", "strengthens your immune system" and "stimulates your metabolism".
Byrne also favours stricter regulations on food labels. The commission fears that terms such as "low fat", "fat free", "low in sugar", or "high in vitamins" may be misleading consumers.
If the law is passed, each new advertising campaign in the food and stimulant industry will be subject to approval by the EU Food Safety Office - a procedure that could take months.
