Eindhoven (pte034/09.04.2003/12:45) - Philips is elaborating its reference design for DVD+RW recorders to include streaming media and broadband, a development which points toward the increased convergence between entertainment electronics and PCs.
The Nexperia systems platform will receive an additional processor for the processing of media formats such as MPEG-4, H.264 and DivX. The chips also have an ethernet controller for broadband connections, so that the recorders can directly access media content on the web http://www.philipssemiconductor.com/news/content/file_946.html .
The core of the Nexperia platform is the pnx7100 MPEG CODEC for MPEG audio and video encoding. This has been expanded to include either a pnx1300 or pnx1500 media processor. The processors have been produced in a 0.13 micron production process.
Philips intends to first license the design in Korea and Japan, and bring its broadband-equipped DVD+RW recorders onto the markets in Europe and the USA next year.
