NTT DoCoMo introduces first flash phone
SO505i to come on market with 1 megapixel camera

Tokyo (pte027/09.04.2003/12:01) - Japanese mobile provider NTT DoCoMo has introduced its first family of flash-equipped i-mode mobile phones.

The top model of the series, the SO505i, is the first mobile phone with an integrated 1 megapixel camera. The phone will also use java to access NTT's new "i-appli DX" services. This means the device can take advantage of applications distributed across several servers. In the coming months, NTT DoCoMo plans to bring six versions of the 505i onto the market.

The 505i has a 2.2-inch display with over 260,000 colours and a slot for Sony's Memory Stick Duo. This version of the phone weighs 145 grams. Other editions are somewhat lighter, but their integrated cameras have lower resolution and they require mini-SD cards as external storage.

NTT DoCoMo announced its partnership with Macromedia last February. NTT is interested in the development of content for its phones. Flash will permit i-mode users to directly click onto elements of the graphic user surface, instead of having to navigate through complex menus.
