Berkeley (pte042/07.04.2003/16:08) - The makers of the Seti@home project http://www.setiathome.org , which searches spaces for signs of extraterrestrial life, are warning of a security gap in their screen saver program.
Seti workers have recommended that users download the updated 3.08 version of Seti@home. Older versions may be susceptible to buffer overflow attacks, potentially giving hackers access to individual computers. In order to do this, however, a hacker must first make the client contact a false server. As far as the organizers know, no successful attack has been carried out to date http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/version308.html .
The Seti project uses the untapped capacities of personal computers to examine radio signals from space for signs of extraterrestrial life. The download for the new client is already available. More detailed information on the security gap can be found under http://spoor12.edup.tudelft.nl .
