Doha (pte029/07.04.2003/13:58) - US provider Akamai Technologies will not longer be providing its services to Qatar-based news station Al-Jazeera. The Arabian station had hired the Massachusetts-based company to bring its English language website http://english.aljazeera.net back online after a hack attack, and protect it against hackers in the future.
Akamai has a broad network of servers that can protect websites against attacks. CNN and MCNBC are both clients of the US provider. Joanne Tucker, who publishes the English site, said in the New York Times that the deal had already been sealed. But a letter arrived soon after, cancelling the arrangement.
The response in Al-Jazeera headquarters in Doha was one of disappointment, but not surprise. Tucker is convinced that the cancellation has nothing to do with technical matters. "It is because of the constant political pressure on the company not to work with us," said Tucker. Akamai http://www.akamai.com confirmed that the deal had been called off, but did not wish to explain why.
The English Al-Jazeera website had barely been online for 12 hours before it fell victim to a hacker offensive. (newsfox-special Iraq)
