FBI investigates attack on Al-Jazeera site
English version of Arabian portal still offline

Washington/ Doha (pte025/28.03.2003/13:04) - The FBI http://www.fbi.gov has taken up the investigation of the hacker attack on the website of Arabian news station Al-Jazeera http://english.aljazeera.net .

Hackers sympathising with the US had apparently used a fake entry in the name service to direct traffic on the site to another website. The English online version of the Arabian news station Al-Jazeera, which had already once fallen prey to a "denial of service" attack, is still unavailable.

Some visitors who tried to log onto the site during the past days saw US flags bearing the message "Let Freedom Ring", and visitors to the Arabic webpage were re-directed to a porno website.

The station itself has called the incident an attack on the freedom of the press. While the Arabic site has gone up again, the re-launch of the regular English portal will be delayed until April, as reported by the BBC.

The administrators of the domains, which belong to Verisign subsidiary Network Solutions http://www.networksolutions.com , have already begun re-routing Al-Jazeera's web traffic, but it will take some time for this to become effective throughout the Internet. (newsfox-special Iraq)
