International TV market recovering
German market still in consolidation phase

Munich (pte036/27.03.2003/13:19) - The international market for TV rights is slowly recovering after two years of poor earnings. According to Handelsblatt http://www.handelsblatt.com , many foreign TV stations are once again in a position to buy TV series and films.

Although a severe drop in advertising revenues over the past two years has forced the branch to take saving measures, analysts say the industry is finally on its way to recovery - in spite of the war in Iraq.

However Germany, with the third largest television market in the world, is still lagging behind on the international scene. Representatives of the German TV licensing trade hope the takeover of the Kirch Group by US millionaire Haim Saban will help boost sales and improve market dynamics.

"The international licensing market is recovering," Jens Richter, managing director of Beta Film, the film rights subsidiary of KirchMedia, said in an interview with Handelsblatt. He believes that demand is on the rise, fuelled in part by a decrease in licensing fees for TV series and films. In the last two years rights fees dropped by between ten and 20 per cent.

Beta Film says it makes most of its turnover in France, Spain and Italy. Business with Asian stations has increased by 70 per cent compared to the year 2002. According to Handelsblatt, the German market is still in a phase of consolidation.
